Sony Corporation produces cameras with different configurations for various countries. Depending on the region for which the camera is intended, the available features may vary:

  • Availability of WiFi 5GHz. Enables higher-speed data transfer over WiFi.
  • PAL/NTSC selector. This determines the available frame rates (fps) for video recording. For PAL: multiples of 25 (25fps, 50fps, 100fps); for NTSC: 30, 60, 120.

Here are the known Sony camera regions as of today. Most are no longer found on new models. The main regions currently in Russia are AF1, AP2, CN1, J1, KR2.

How can I find out the region of my camera?

Usually, the region is indicated on the barcode on the box:

Camera with AP2 region from Dubai

Camera with AP2 region from Dubai

Sometimes, this barcode may be removed.

In such cases, you can indirectly determine the region by the default time zone shown during the initial setup of the camera.

Asian region: the default time zone will be New York/Bogota.
African region: Dubai.

Cameras from different regions also differ in available language sets, which is why we offer services for unlocking/setting the Russian language on your Sony camera. Later, I will publish a list of available languages for each region.

How can I identify the region using the serial number?

There’s a belief that you can determine the exact region of a Sony camera based on the serial number. This is not entirely accurate. You can only make an educated guess, as cameras with neighboring serial numbers likely belong to the same region.

The serial number can be found on the sticker at the bottom of the camera.

Some educated guesses:

  • Sony a6700.
    • AP2 (Asian region). Serial numbers: 275****, 276****, 509****.
  • Sony FX3.
    • AF1 (Middle East). Serial numbers: 487****.
  • Sony FX30.
    • AF1. Serial numbers: 650****.
    • AP2. Serial numbers: 507****.

Which region’s cameras have Russian language available?

Russian is available on cameras with the CEC (European) region. After sanctions were introduced, cameras imported to Russia through gray/parallel imports primarily belong to the following regions: AP2, AF1, KR2 (occasionally found on Ozon). Thus, if you bought your camera in Russia after February 24, 2022, it is unlikely to have the Russian language unless modified.

If that’s the case, you can contact us for assistance. We unlock Russian/Ukrainian languages on any Sony camera from any region.
